Rishabh Pant to miss crucial match due to suspension

Delhi Capitals’ skipper Rishabh Pant won’t participate in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 fixture as he has received a one-match suspension for a slow over-rate during their clash with Rajasthan Royals.

In addition to the ban, the penalty for the delay includes an INR three million fine imposed on the wicket-keeper batsman, with his team falling behind by 10 minutes at the commencement of the concluding over on May 07.

The tournament has witnessed Pant making his third infraction this season in regard to the IPL guidelines on the minimum over-rate requirement.

Every player who was part of the starting eleven in that match, along with the Impact Player, faced a penalty ranging from INR1.2 million to half of their match fee, whichever amount is lower.

After receiving the sanctions, Delhi Capitals contested the match referee’s determination, under the provisions of the IPL Code of Conduct, Article 8. An appeal was made, leading to a BCCI Ombudsman reassessment. The subsequent virtual hearing concluded with the affirmation of the match referee’s original verdict as final and conclusive.

The Delhi Capitals, currently situated at the fifth position in the league standings with a total of 12 points and a net run rate of -0.316, have to face off with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a pivotal encounter which is a determining factor for their playoff aspirations. The match is set for Sunday at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

In Pant’s enforced absence, Axar Patel will take the helm of the team, with both squads in dire need of a victory to maintain their prospects of reaching the playoffs.
