Pakistan reports third polio case of 2024

ISLAMABAD: A young girl from Kila Abdullah has been identified as the third individual in Pakistan to contract polio this year, an announcement made by the Ministry of National Health on Saturday.

The testing facility dedicated to polio confirmed that the girl, originating from the Balochistan district of Kila Abdullah, exhibited paralysis symptoms on April 20. The Ministry is currently conducting genetic analyses on the patient’s samples.

This recent case constitutes the third instance of polio within Pakistan in 2024, with each case emerging from the region of Balochistan.

The first instance involved a four-year-old boy from the Chaman locality of Mir Ali Zai, who was stricken with this incapacitating disease.

Previously, on March 14, a spokesperson for the National Ministry for Health acknowledged Pakistan’s first polio case of the year, involving a two-and-a-half-year-old from Dera Bugti.

This initial case was traced to a child residing in Union Council No. 3 UC of Sui in the Dera Bugti area. According to authorities at the National Institute of Health, the poliovirus found in this child shares a genetic link to strains previously identified in Quetta.

The following day, another case surfaced in the Mir Ali Zai area of Chaman, affirming a four-year-old boy had contracted the debilitating disease.
