ISLAMABAD: In the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan of the PTI party voiced his objections on Tuesday to the Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, for making ‘personal and offensive’ remarks regarding his grandfather and Pakistan’s former leader, Ayub Khan.

While on the parliamentary floor, Ayub dismissed Asif’s comments as distasteful. “We should stick to the facts; Ayub Khan is an important figure in history, and it was actually Iskander Mirza who instigated the initial martial law,” he argued.

Omar had previously condemned interference in the 2024 general elections, calling for a judicial review and possible charges of treason under Article 6 of the Constitution for such actions.

In response, during a tumultuous session, the defence minister lashed out at Omar, calling for the former military ruler’s legacy to be dealt with strictly in accordance with Article 6.

The defence minister suggested that Ayub Khan’s remains should be exhumed and treated as per the article, which labels any forceful attempt to undermine the Constitution as an act of high treason, punishable by death or life imprisonment under the High Treason (Punishment) Act of 1973.

Minimal Reactions to Asif’s Statement Are Insufficient: Gohar

PTI representative Barrister Gohar Khan took the floor of the assembly to voice his disapproval of Asif’s inflammatory statement, affirming that the dignity of the house and its members shall not be undermined.

He insisted that mere disapproval of the words spoken against the PTI member was inadequate, advocating for the minister’s suspension during the ongoing assembly.

The presiding officers mentioned that the inappropriate language used had been retracted from the official records.

Gohar denounced the accusations directed toward Omar’s family by the federal minister as contemptible, stressing Omar’s unblemished career of 22 years as a lawmaker.
