In April, Azerbaijan stressed that Pakistan should renew imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Central Asian country to address its escalating domestic usage needs.
Previously, during the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) administration, both nations finalized an agreement for importing at least one LNG cargo monthly.
This agreement was devoid of the debatable “take-or-pay” clause, making it a commercial contract more advantageous for Pakistan. However, Islamabad imported only a limited number of LNG cargoes from Azerbaijan and failed to maintain a regular supply schedule.
Additionally, Pakistan has been acquiring LNG from Qatar for several years under a long-standing agreement. This contract follows the take-or-pay clause, obligating Pakistan to import gas from Doha without any discontinuation.
