Theatre director Feroz Abbas Khan | Back to roots

Over the past ten years, Feroz Abbas Khan has emerged as a titan of the theatre world, akin to esteemed filmmakers S.S. Rajamouli or Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His productions, such as the opulent musicals Mughal-e-Azam, Raunaq & Jassi, and Civilization to Nation—the latter debuting the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai—meld various arts to create grandiose performances, thereby bringing the magic of theatre to a wider audience. Khan reveals that steering large-scale productions with over a hundred participants was not an intentional choice but driven by passion. He confides that his roots are in the essence of theatre—stripped-down and intimate. “My fundamental training in theatre is in simplicity and that’s where I’m most at ease,” he observes. “To distill language and performance to its essence, that is the real strength of theatre.”
