Sunny Deol in the eye of a storm: Accused of cheating, forgery, lies by film producers

Film producer Sorav Gupta (of Sundawn Entertainment Pvt Ltd) has made startling accusations of fraud, blackmail, and forgery against actor-MP Sunny Deol. In a news conference earlier this week, Gupta, a real estate mogul turned filmmaker, claimed that Sunny Deol accepted upfront payment from him in 2016 to star in a movie, continued to demand additional funds while assuring that he would commence the project, but ultimately failed to deliver on his promises after his recent movie Gadar 2 became a major success.

Gupta informs HT City that in 2016 he struck a deal with Sunny Deol as the lead for his film at a fee of ₹4cr. “We advanced him ₹1cr but instead of initiating my film, he chose to film Poster Boys (2017) instead. He kept asking for more money and at this point, ₹2.55cr is with Sunny ji. He also compelled me to pay another director, book Filmistaan studio, and hire an executive producer,” Gupta tells us.

The producer additionally claims that Deol forged an agreement with his company in 2023. “When we examined the agreement, we saw that he had altered one of the middle pages, increasing the fees from ₹4cr to ₹8cr and the profit share to ₹2cr,” he discloses.

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, recognized for movies such as Janwar (1999) and Andaaz (2003), also supported Gupta in the same news conference and claimed that he, too, had similar issues with Sunny Deol. “Sunny Deol acquired overseas distribution rights for my movie Ajay (1996) and only made a partial payment. The balance was never settled,” says Darshan, adding, “Later, Sunny asked me to collaborate on a project, urging me, ‘Have faith in me, help me out,’ and made me pay him again.”

An industry insider, speaking anonymously, tells us that Deol has a reputation for breaking commitments with multiple producers after signing contracts. “He has been known for causing trouble for years. Sunny had provided a bound script of a film called Ram Janmbhumi to a producer who built a massive set in Mumbai. Sunny signed the movie for ₹5cr. But later, he declined to arrive at the sets and demanded a fee of ₹25cr because he had delivered a blockbuster (Gadar 2, 2023).”

Gupta reveals that he has lodged a police complaint against Deol. “The police issued [Deol] a notice on April 30. His office responded with a letter stating he was out of town on the day he was supposed to appear,” says Gupta.

We attempted to contact Sunny Deol for his perspective but received no reply.
