Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the visionary behind the Film Heritage Foundation, the not-for-profit organization responsible for the film’s restoration, was also in attendance at the screening. Celebrating the successful event, the Film Heritage Foundation shared on Instagram the warm reception and standing ovation Naseeruddin Shah received at the film’s world premiere. They expressed how much more special the moment could have been with the presence of director Shyam Benegal. The heartfelt post read, “It was a truly memorable evening as FHF’s restoration of ‘Manthan’ had its world premiere yesterday at the Festival de Cannes 2024 ending with a standing ovation for Naseeruddin Shah and much appreciation for the quality of the restoration by the audience.”

Written collaboratively by the esteemed Shyam Benegal and the renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar, “Manthan” stands as an extraordinary example of community involvement, having been funded entirely by 500,000 farmers contributing 2 each. The film’s meticulous restoration was undertaken from the 35mm original camera negatives safeguarded by the NFDC-National Film Archive of India, with the sound being digitized from the 35mm release prints preserved by the Film Heritage Foundation, as detailed on the festival’s official site.
