Malayalam actress Kani Kusruti garnered worldwide recognition for her acting in Payal Kapadia‘s All We Imagine As Light, which was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival last week. In a conversation with Manorama Online, she revealed that although she receives fewer film proposals, she refused an audition call from The Kerala Story filmmaker Sudipto Sen. For example, she disclosed that she passed up an audition request by Sudipto Sen, the director of the previous year’s divisive Bollywood hit, The Kerala Story. Kani on BiriyaniHowever, she also faced criticism for her part in Biriyaani, which some argued depicted Muslims in an oversimplified and offensive manner. “I had informed Sajin that my beliefs and aesthetics did not coincide with the script. Sajin hails from an underprivileged Muslim background and expresses his own beliefs, which are valid in their own sense. But that doesn’t represent my stance,” she clarified.
