Melinda French Gates, once partnered with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, has decided to step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This news comes three years following their separation.

Through a message shared on a platform known as X, previously recognized as Twitter, Melinda French Gates emphasized the importance of championing and protecting women’s rights globally in these pivotal times.

The Gates, who separated in May 2021, managed to maintain a professional relationship through the organization they established in 2000.

Following her departure, Melinda French Gates is poised to commit an additional $12.5 billion towards causes supporting women and families, an agreement that stems from both her resignation and their previous divorce settlement.

Commenting on her departure, Bill Gates stated, “It’s with a heavy heart that I witness Melinda’s departure, but there’s no doubt in my mind about the positive change she’ll enact through her continued philanthropy.”

The foundation, under the collaborative leadership of Bill and Melinda French Gates, has directed substantial efforts towards eliminating poverty, enhancing global health measures, and eradicating diseases such as malaria and polio particularly in Africa and Asia.

Melinda has ardently supported endeavors targeting gender equality and went on to establish Pivotal Ventures, an independent organization, in 2015, apart from the Gates Foundation.

Their marital split followed investigations by The New York Times into Bill Gates’s links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which sparked considerable media attention.

As one of the world’s leading philanthropic entities, the Gates Foundation has made a significant impact in numerous spheres.

With her exit, Melinda French Gates aligns with MacKenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, by forging her philanthropic path apart from her former spouse.
